- Allied health professionals (AHPs) are ‘highly skilled, tertiary trained autonomous professionals’who, alongside primary clinical carers such as nursing staff, contribute to patient care. In Australia, AHPs most commonly identified as operating within palliative care services include social workers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, bereavement workers, speech pathologists, dietitians and psychologists. In Australia, AHPs are recognised as making a crucial contribution to the country’s healthcare services, and this is also the case in other developed countries. However, it is acknowledged that their skills are frequently undervalued, their input under-recognised, and their professional development limited. Within palliative care, the lack of promotion and advancement of AHPs is exacerbated, due largely to the fact that this relatively young specialty is still evolving.
